Optimising Your Images For SEO

When performing SEO on your website you need to cover a few basic techniques. One of them is one site SEO. This is really only 5% of the whole SEO process but it is an important 5%. One way of informing the search engines such as Google of the keywords you would like your website to be ranked for is optimising your images on your site.

You should rename your images to your keywords you are looking to be ranked for. Most people name their images as ‘Image1′ or keep the name of the image that they used to download from the internet or from their camera. If you have read any of our previous blogs you should know not to focus on one keyword, you should use a minimum of 5 keywords. If you are a Courier in Derby and one of your keywords is ‘Couriers Derby’ you should rename your images as ‘CouriersDerby1′, ‘CouriersDerby2′, ‘CouriersDerby3′ and so on. You should do this with all of your images for all 5 of your Local SEO keywords.

Once you have renamed all of your images you need to apply your 5 keywords to the Alt Tags on all of your images. An Alt Tag tells the search engines what the image is about. Because the search engine robots cannot see your image as they can only read black text in your code, you ned to tell them what the image is by using an Alt Tag which looks something like this within your code <img src=”images/CouriersDerby1.jpg” alt=”Couriers Derby” width=”333″ height=”198″ border=”0″  />. This tells Google that your image is for Couriers Derby.

As mentioned Google spiders when crawling your website can only see you code, not your images. Just because your image is related to your keyword doesn’t mean these robots know that, hence why you need an Alt Tag. When the spiders crawl your website they will see your code contains ‘Couriers Derby’ throughout your page which is perfect for Local SEO.
